Dr. Sullivan studies how landscapes that we design, especially urban landscapes, impact the health and wellbeing of people. With his students, he examines this question by measuring exposure to varying landscapes — the level of green infrastructure in neighborhoods, the amount of nature on campuses, the density of vegetation in urban spaces, or the biodiversity in landscapes near where people live. They measure the impact of these places on people’s hormones, heart rates, neural activity, psychological states, and ability to pay attention.
